May 21, 1994, started like any other day and ended like nothing I'd ever experienced.
My mother died that day. She was 56. The most faithful person I'd ever known. Every morning at 6 a.m., Bible open in her lap, praying for people who didn't even know she was praying for them.
And when she died, I wasn't just sad.
I was angry at God.
If anyone had earned protection, it was her. And I stood in that bedroom watching my father say goodbye to her, thinking, how could you let this happen.
Maybe you know that feeling. Maybe you've dressed it up in safer language because you weren't sure you were allowed to say the real thing out loud.
You are.
That's where day one starts. In that bedroom. With that question. And with a verse my mother lived by every single morning from an orange rocking chair that kept showing up in my memory long after she was gone.
Psalm 46:1. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Not after the trouble passes. Already there. In the room. In the grief. In the anger you're not sure you're allowed to feel.
